In 2024, the inaugural Bunjil’s View, a short-form video featuring participants from our local region, was presented in the Gallery as part of the annual NAIDOC exhibition. Buoyed by the cultural pride and positive reception of the work, in 2025, a second iteration of the video project was developed and presented in the same fashion. Now in 2026, a third work in the series is unveiled, with all three short-form videos taking centre stage. <image:title>Calendar - National Photographic Portrait Prize 2025 - A National Portrait Gallery Exhibition</image:title>
<image:caption>Now in its 18th year, the National Photographic Portrait Prize supports and celebrates photographic portraiture in Australia. Each year the prize attracts thousands of entrants from emerging and established artistic talent across the country. In 2025, the judges – writer and broadcaster Benjamin Law, Senior Curator at the National Portrait Gallery Serena Bentley, and Leigh Robb, Curator of Contemporary Art at the Art Gallery of South Australia selected 48 finalists from a field of more than 1400 entries. Featuring famous faces and everyday Australians, the prize celebrates the vitality and diversity of photographic portraiture in Australia and invites us into the intimate world of a subject/artist relationship and provides a powerful visual record of the year, reflecting a particular time in Australian culture, both socially and artistically. This exhibition is supported by the National Collecting Institutions Touring and Outreach Program, an Australian Government program aiming to improve access to the national collections for all Australians. <image:title>Calendar - REVELATION: Aunty Di Turner - The softness of silk and the warmth of wool hold the marks of Country not as decoration, but as evidence of relationship in REVELATION, the inaugural solo exhibition of the Ararat-based artist.</image:title>
<image:caption>Aunty Di Turner (born Gawler, SA, 1959?), is a member of the Stolen Generations from Kaurna Country, South Australia, living the rest of her life on Djab Wurrung Country. The softness of silk and the warmth of wool hold the marks of Country not as decoration, but as evidence of relationship in REVELATION, the inaugural solo exhibition of the Ararat-based artist. Working with materials such as leaves, flowers, iron and copper, Turner uses eco-dyeing processes to draw colour, trace and pattern from the natural world and onto silk and wool. The process is both physical and intuitive. Rather than imposing an image onto the surface, Turner allows fibre, plant, metal and water to work together. The resulting textiles carry the imprint of Country through gathered materials, organic forms and mineral change. The title REVELATION is intentionally multi-faceted. It alludes to the way the eco-dyeing process reveals new colours within cloth, the artist’s own artistic progression as a result of this exhibition, and the revelatory power of nature and the places that shape us. In this very special exhibition, Turner has expanded on her textile practice to explore contemporary textile installation, allowing her work to shift, move and respond to the movement of visitors within the exhibition space. <image:title>Calendar - No tears in the bush: Neil Douglas - Neil Douglas was an artist deeply connected to the Australian bush.</image:title>
<image:caption>Committed to conservation, Douglas helped shape attitudes toward the protection of the natural environment and was awarded an MBE in recognition of his services to conservation and the arts. Rejecting romanticised views of the landscape, his work portrays the bush as a harsh arena of survival, where life and death unfold without sentiment. His paintings capture this uncompromising realism, reflecting his belief that “there are no tears in the bush.” (Caroline Field, Neil Douglas Recent works, 1989, Horsham Regional Art Gallery). Working en plein air, Douglas immersed himself fully in his surroundings, believing the bush to be a total sensory experience rather than a passive scene. His practice was grounded in direct engagement: to feel, inhabit, and ultimately capture the essence of the landscape. Through this approach, his work invites viewers toward a deeper understanding and appreciation of the Australian environment. Douglas’s connection to nature was both intimate and unconventional. From an early age, he chose to go barefoot, believing his feet to be sensitive recorders of the textures and rhythms of the land. This heightened physical awareness is reflected in the immediacy and tactility of his work. In addition to painting, Douglas was renowned for decorating earthenware vessels and ceramic sculptures. Australian flora and fauna featured prominently in these works, establishing visual motifs that would later inform his oil paintings. Together, these practices reveal an artist committed not only to representing the bush, but also to preserving its spirit for future generations.
