Art is… FUNdamental: Wimmera Artists on Fire Exhibition

The Art Is… festival is delighted to present Wimmera Artists on Fire in conjunction with the Horsham Regional Art Gallery and the Horsham Rural City Council.

In the second year of cycling through the elements as part of our five year plan to present Art is… FUNdamental, we invited our artistic community to create work to present in this community space in response to the theme of fire. The element of fire can represent light, warmth, a sense of belonging and companionship, sustenance and even an essential building block of society. However, what drew many of our artists was that here on the lands of the Wotjobaluk, Jaadwa, Jadawadjali, Jupagalk and Wergaia peoples, barpa (fire) is necessarily part of every image of the landscape.

We acknowledge the unbroken connection traditional owners have with this place, as part of the longest unbroken connection with place on the planet, just as contemporary artists reflect and represent their connection with it.
