Art Is Classical! – With Horsham Rural City Band

Presented by the Art Is... Festival 2023
Art Is Classical - Festival 2023

Featuring:

  • Horsham Rural City Band
  • John Noble’s Horsham String Ensemble
  • Original works by Nick Shirrefs

John Noble has created Itet – an exciting, innovative & inspiring String Chamber Music Program for students of regional & rural Victoria. This will be the first outing for the Gariwerd String Quartet. They will perform Haydn Quartet “The Joke” Opus 33 No. 2 – movement 4 Finale Presto, and Handel, Arrival of the Queen of Sheba.

The Horsham Rural City Band will perform pieces including La Rejoiussance from the Royal Fireworks (Handel), Fire Dance (Schaffer), A Sky Full of Stars (Martin/Coldplay), Firework (K.Perry), Fireball (Pitbull). The Horsham Rural City Band celebrated its 150th birthday in 2022 and has transformed over the past decade from a brass band into being able to perform as a chamber orchestra with percussion, brass, and woodwind sections. It performs widely and regularly across the Wimmera to great acclaim. They’re led by Lauren Arnett, the first woman to lead the band in its history.

Nick Shirrefs has composed four “fiery passionate” original pieces for the occasion which will performed by his hand-picked players assembled as a chamber orchestra. The pieces are:

Tango Escarlata (Scarlet Tango)

Tarantella, Fuoco e Furia (Fire and Fury)

Calor do Samba (Samba Heat)

Cha Cha Cubano (Cuban Cha Cha)

Nick is head of Music at Horsham College and composed the original score for the silent film Zemlya in last year’s Art is Festival, just one of his many musical accomplishments.
