Amabile Dalfarra-Smith: Rhythm of the Land

Rhythm of the Land is an exhibition of new paintings by Horsham-based artist Amabile Dalfarra-Smith. Born in Mildura, but a resident of Horsham for more than forty years, Horsham Regional Art Gallery is pleased to present this solo exhibition celebrating the artist’s latest body of work.
The Rhythm of the Land series demonstrates a transition in the artist’s practice, from the recognisable landscapes of her already established career. These new works also reveal a movement towards abstraction and an extension beyond the natural palette.
‘These paintings are a result of my experimenting with acrylic paint and using large brushes to avoid getting bogged down with too much detail. Even though I am stimulated by the landscape I have tried to interpret it in my own way because I want to create a work of art and not a copy of nature’.
Drawn from the artist’s memories of travelling throughout regional Victoria, including paintings inspired by the high country as well as local vistas within the South-West, Dalfarra-Smith’s work in this series captures a cacophony of contrast and colour. She utilises a layered colour-building approach, building depth and giving detail to the trees and vegetation so familiar to this region.
Amabile Dalfarra-Smith has exhibited widely across Australia and has work in many public and private collections, including the National Gallery of Australia.
